Bisons battle back for win

Herd newcomer Bubba Bell capped a two-out rally in the eighth inning to give the Bisons a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the Bats on Sunday afternoon from Louisville Slugger Field.

Bell’s game-winning double drove home two of the Herd’s three runs in the frame as the team erased a 3-1 deficit for a much needed victory.

The Bisons had just four outs left in the game and were staring at a fourth straight loss before the offense rallied for four consecutive hits. Nick Evans followed knocks from Luis Hernandez and Kirk Nieuwenhuis with an RBI-single to close the Herd to within one.

Making his first start as a Bison, Bell ripped a 1-0 pitch from reliever Jordan Smith down the left field line. Nieuwenhuis scored easily from third, and when Yondor Alonso had trouble digging the ball out of the corner, Evans came to the plate as well.

The 4-3 advantage was the first lead the Bisons held in the three-game series. Louisville scored in the first inning of all three games including a solo run on Sunday. That lead was 2-0 before the Herd cut the score in half on an RBI-single from Jesus Feliciano in the fifth.

Added to the Bisons roster on Sunday, Pedro Beato pitched 1.1 innings in relief to earn the win. The Mets righty is on a major league injury rehab assignment after being placed on the DL by New York on May 4 with right elbow tendinitis. D.J. Carrasco allowed three runs in six innings in the no-decision.

BISONS NOTES: The game was delayed by one hour and 15 minutes at the start because of rain…Sunday’s game wasn’t Bell’s first action with the team. He came into Saturday night’s contest late and singled in his only at-bat…Dale Thayer pitched the final 1.2 innings for his third save of the season.

DICKEY allowed six runs to fall to 1-5 on the season. The rubber-match of the three-game series with the Astros is this afternoon at 2:05 p.m.

Bisons fall to Bats, 8-3

It wasn’t quite the deficit the Herd faced on Friday night, but a four-run first inning was more than enough to give Louisville another victory over the Herd.

The Bats collected an 8-3 win over Buffalo on Saturday from Louisville Slugger Field. Devin Mesoraco hit a three-run home run and Dontrelle Willis worked into the sixth inning for his third win of the season.

The Bisons began their eight-game roadtrip on Friday night, but the Bats didn’t exactly roll out the welcome mat. Louisville scored seven runs in the first inning en route to a 15-7 win in the series opener.

On Saturday night, it was a 4-0 lead built by the Bats offense off Herd starter, Brian Sweeney. Doubles from Zach Cozart and Juan Francisco opened the scoring. Two batters later, Mesoraco launched a 2-1 pitch from the Bisons’ righty to deep left field.

A second four-run rally from the Bats put the game out of reach in the fifth inning. Louisville loaded the bases with two singles and a walk to knock Sweeney from the game. Mesoraco collected a fourth RBI with a ground out off of reliever Bobby Parnell. Danny Dorn and Brent Clevlen followed with back-to-back doubles to give Louisville an 8-2 edge.

The Bats have now won four straight from the Bisons, dating back to the series back at Coca-Cola Field to begin May.

Buffalo scored two of their three runs in the second inning. Jon Malo and Raul Chavez each collected RBI singles.

BISONS NOTES:Bubba Bell made his Bisons debut and collected a single in his only at-bat. It’s the third straight day a player has collected a hit in his first at-bat with the team. Michael Fisher doubled on Thursday and Luis Figueroa had a pinch-hit single on Friday…John Lujan pitched two shutout innings in relief.

Slugfest in the Bats house

On Friday night, the Louisville Bats put the “slug” into Louisville Slugger Field.

The Bats score seven runs in the first inning and pounded out 18 hits in a 15-7 victory over the Bisons in the first game of a four-game series. Buffalo hit three home runs, including their first three-run blast of the season, but it was not nearly enough in the blowout loss.

Eight of the first nine Louisville hitters of the night reached base against Herd hurler, Casey Fossum. Jeremy Hermida’s three-run home run and Kris Negron’s two-run double gave the Bats a 6-0 edge before two outs were even recorded. Zack Cozart, who started the rally with a lead-off double, drove home a seventh run with and RBI-ground out.

It wasn’t until Louisville had a 9-0 lead that the Bisons dented the scoreboard. Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and Nick Evans went deep in the fifth. The Herd score four more runs in the six, three on Luis Hernandez’s first homer of the season.

However, every time Buffalo scored, Louisville kept their big lead intact. Even after their seven-run first inning, the Bats scored in every inning from the third to the seventh. Todd Frazier took Dylan Owen deep in the fourth inning and Juan Francisco hit a three-run shot of the Bisons’ righty in the fifth.

Casey Fossum fell to 0-3 with the loss. The southpaw saw his ERA jump from 3.58 to 5.87 after allowing nine runs in three innings.

BISONS NOTES:The Bisons had hit 28 home runs this season before getting their first three-run shot of the year…Luis Figueroa made his Bisons debut and collected a pinch-hit single in the seventh inning…Friday’s game was the third time this season the Bisons had yielded 10+ runs in a game.
