Stewart's slam hurts Herd
Chris Stewart belted an 11th inning grand slam to break a 1-1 tie for Scranton/WB against Buffalon on Tuesday night.
Javier Castillo put the Bisons ahead in the seventh with a lead-off home run. SWB’s Juan Miranda tied the game in the ninth with a solo blast.

TODAY’S GAME: Tonight, the Buffalo Bisons take on the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees in the first game in a two-game series from Coca-Cola Field (7:05 p.m.). The Bisons are coming off a split of a four-game series against Rochester from Frontier Field. Following this two-game set, the Herd will travel to Pawtucket and Scranton-Wilkes Barre for a couple of two-game series’ before next week’s All-Star Break.
vs. THE YANKEES: The Bisons are 1-5 against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season. The Herd was swept in a four-game series by the Yanks at Coca-Cola Field, April 13-16. The teams then split a two-game set at PNC Field, April 21-22. Buffalo holds the 92-89 (.508) advantage in the series since returning to the International League in 1998.
TAKAHASHI TO START: LHP Ken Takahashi will make his first start for the Bisons tonight. The veteran has pitched nine games out of the bullpen for the Herd so far this year, posting a 0.95ERA in 19.0 innings of work. However, the southpaw is no stranger to the starting role. During his long career in Japan, Takahashi started 160 games for the Hiroshima Carp, including 20 starts in each of the past two seasons.
HOT HITTER: INF Javier Castillo has the team’s top current hit streak. The infielder has hit in 10 straight games, averaging .421 (16-38) since June 26. Castillo has posted five multi-hit performances during the hot stretch as well as three doubles, two home runs and four RBI.
FEELIN’ SULLY: The hits keep coming for OF Cory Sullivan. The outfielder went 1-3 yesterday with one run and a walk. In his last 11 games, Sullivan is averaging .419 (18-43) with 10 runs scored, four doubles and six RBI. It has now been almost two months since Sullivan went hitless in consecutive starts (May 8-9, 0-7). Since the start of June, Sullivan has averaged .342 (39-114).
IL’S TOP PITCHER: The International League announced yesterday that LHP Jonathon Niese was the IL’s Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 29 – July 5. Niese was 1-0 with a 1.06ERA in his two starts last week, including a nine-inning complete-game shutout of Rochester on July 5.

TODAY’S GAME: Tonight, the Buffalo Bisons take on the Rochester Red Wings for the final game in a four-game series from Frontier Field (7:05 p.m.). The Bisons opened up the four-game in three-day series with an 8-3 victory Saturday night, then split a doubleheader yesterday (5-9 and 5-0). On Tuesday, the Bisons will return home to face the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees in a two-game series from Coca-Cola Field.
vs. THE WINGS: The Bisons are now 2-3 against the Red Wings this season, having won two of the last three games. Buffalo holds the 100-80 (.555) advantage in the series since returning to the IL in 1998. The Bisons have reached the 100-win plateau against two teams since rejoining the IL (Syracuse, 100-86).
NIESE-LY DONE: LHP Jonathon Niese (4-6) was incredible last night delivering a complete game shutout in the second game of the doubleheader. Niese gave up only five hits with two walks and had a Bisons season-high 10 strikeouts in nine innings of work. The southpaw has won four straight decisions with 35 strikeouts to only nine walks in his last five starts. In those five starts, he has lasted an average of 7.2 innings per game with a 0.72ERA in 37.1 innings of work. The International League announced today that Niese was the League’s Pitcher of the Week for the period from June 29-July 5.
FEELIN’ SULLY: The hits keep coming for OF Cory Sullivan. The outfielder went 3-8 throughout the double-header yesterday with a double and three RBI. In his last 10 games, Sullivan is averaging .425 (17-40) with nine runs scored, four doubles, and six RBI. Sullivan is now batting .297 on the season. He has also been one of the Herd’s most impressive defensive players recording his Bison-leading fifth outfield assist in game two last night.
HOT HITTER: C Robinson Cancel has the team’s top current hit streak. The veteran has hit in 10 straight, averaging .316 (12-38) since June 19. In the first game of the double-header yesterday, Cancel went 1-3 with a run scored and a walk. Former Bison Wily Mo Pena has the season-high with his 13-game hit streak, May 25 -June 7.
Niese IL Pitcher of the Week
The International League announced today that Buffalo Bisons LHP Jonathon Niese was the league’s Pitcher of the Week for the period from June 29- July 5.
Niese was 1-0 with a 1.06ERA in two starts for the Bisons this past week. The southpaw struck out 14 batters and allowed just 10 hits in 17.0 innings of work.
Niese’s week was highlighted by a complete-game shutout of the Rochester Red Wings on Sunday night at Frontier Field. The 22-year old struck out a Bisons season-high 10 batters and allowed just five hits and two walks. It was Niese’s fourth consecutive winning decision. He also worked eight innings on Tuesday night against Charlotte and gave up just three runs (two earned) on five hits in a no-decision.
In his last six starts, Niese is 4-1 with a 1.04ERA for the Bisons. He has allowed just five runs on 30 hits in his last 43.1 innings of work (39 strikeouts).
Niese is the second Bisons pitcher to win the award in the past four weeks. RHP Nelson Figueroa was the IL Pitcher of the Week from June 8-14.
The last nine-inning complete game shutout by a Buffalo pitcher was a four-hitter by Scott Elarton in 10-0 win over Charlotte on June 7, 2004 at Coca-Cola Field. (there have been several seven-inning shutouts since)
Niese’s 126 pitches, most by a Buffalo starter since Jaret Wright threw 128 in a 1-0 two-hit shutout of Iowa Cubs on June 8, 1997.
Niese nasty in night cap
The Buffalo Bisons, Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets, got their best pitching performance of the season Sunday night. Starter Jonathon Niese tossed a complete game shutout in a 5-0 win over the rival Red Wings.
The lefty allowed only five hits in the game. He walked only two and struck out a season high 10 batters. The final K ended the ballgame as Rochester third baseman Danny Valencia went down looking. The southpaw has now allowed just five earned runs over his last six starts, including three scoreless outings.
