Niese nasty in night cap
The Buffalo Bisons, Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets, got their best pitching performance of the season Sunday night. Starter Jonathon Niese tossed a complete game shutout in a 5-0 win over the rival Red Wings.
The lefty allowed only five hits in the game. He walked only two and struck out a season high 10 batters. The final K ended the ballgame as Rochester third baseman Danny Valencia went down looking. The southpaw has now allowed just five earned runs over his last six starts, including three scoreless outings.
The last nine-inning complete game shutout by a Buffalo pitcher was a four-hitter by Scott Elarton in 10-0 win over Charlotte on June 7, 2004 at Coca-Cola Field. (there have been several seven-inning shutouts since)
Niese’s 126 pitches, most by a Buffalo starter since Jaret Wright threw 128 in a 1-0 two-hit shutout of Iowa Cubs on June 8, 1997.
Niese’s last six outings: 4-1, 1.04 ERA…39 strikeouts, 10 walks in 43 1/3 innings.
