Anyway you put it, Santos is a slam
We mentioned this on the broadcast last night but I thought I’d do a quick post before hitting the I90 to Rochester.
Omir Santos became the first Bisons player in the Modern Era to be promoted to the New York Mets. Since getting the call, he’s made quite an impact.
On the day he was activated, the backstop scored the only run in the Mets’ win and in the 9-inning, framed a pitch to get a ‘called strike three’ and promptly gunned down a runner at second for the strike ’em out – throw ’em out double play to finish off the win.
The magic continued Monday night as the Mets opened their series against the Marlins and Santos made his third start. A six run burst in the first by the Mets was capped by his first MLB homerun – a grand slam – and curtain call from the Citi Field faithful.
Since Brian Schneider could be activated off the disabled list as early as this weekend, it will be interesting to see how much of an impact Santos has had on the office brass and clubhouse. We know what he’s done on the field.
Manager Jerry Manuel told the NY Times, “I like what he gives us.”
And we like it too.

Syracuse sweep
Ryan Langerhans belted a fifth inning grand slam that put the Syracuse lead out of reach for Buffalo on Monday night. The Chiefs’ 7-1 win provided a series sweep against the Bisons.

TODAY’S GAME: Tonight, the Buffalo Bisons host the Syracuse Chiefs in the final game of a four-game series from Coca-Cola Field (6:05 p.m.). The Herd needs a win tonight to avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of the Chiefs. After this series, the Bisons will head to Rochester for a two-game set against the Red Wings before returning home to host the Louisville Bats for four games at Coca-Cola Field.
ROSTER MOVES: The Bisons have activated INF Mike Lamb to their roster today. Lamb has hit .277 with 69 homeruns and 345RBI over nine major league seasons. The Mets announced that they have selected the contract of LHP Ken Takahashi. He had posted a 0.77ERA in six outings for the Herd. New York also released OF Frank Diaz, who was 0-2 in 3 games with the Bisons.
HOT BAT: INF Jonathan Malo is heating up at the plate. The infielder has collected a hit in each the last three games against Syracuse with five hits in 11 at-bats (.455 average). Malo has also doubled in two straight games. So far this season, Malo is hitting .388 (7-18) against Syracuse.
SPEED LIMIT: The Bisons’ catchers lead the International League in both times caught stealing (10) and percentage (45%). The Herd has allowed just 12 stolen bases in 22 attempts by its opponents. As a team, the Bisons .982 fielding percentage is ranked 5th in the International League.
ON THE CHARTS: OF Fernando Martinez is tied with Indianapolis’ INF Garrett Jones with his eight doubles on the season. He is also tied for 4th in the IL in extra-base hits with 10 (8 doubles, 1 triple, 1 homerun).
CASEY ON THE MOUND: The Mets have designated LHP Casey Fossum. The southpaw posted a 0.82ERA in two starts with the Bisons to begin the year. With New York, Fossum had a 2.25ERA in 3 games and 4.0 innings pitched.
OH NELLY: The New York Mets have also re-signed RHP Nelson Figueroa to a minor league deal. Figueroa posted a 3.00ERA in two starts for the Bisons this year before being promoted by the Mets on April 18. Figueroa was 0-1 with a 4.50ERA in one start with New York (6.0IP, 5H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 3K).
Lamb added to lineup
The Buffalo, Bisons, Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets, today activated INF Mike Lamb to their roster. OF Frank Diaz was released by the Mets.
Lamb, 33, was signed to a minor league contract by the Mets on Saturday. He has hit .277 with 69 homeruns and 345RBI over nine major league seasons.
Mets look to Takahashi
My guess is that Ken Takahashi didn’t need a translator to understand some variation of “You’re going to the Big Leagues” or “Welcome to the Mets.”
Mets.com is reporting the veteran reliever was added to the 40-man and the big leagues rosters an hour after the Mets’ 8-1 loss to the Nationals and after the club designated left-handed reliever Casey Fossum for assignment.
READ: Takahashi story on Mets site
Takahashi has appeared in six games with the Mets’ Triple-A Buffalo affiliate, producing a 0.77 ERA in 11 2/3 innings. He allowed 10 hits and six walks and struck out nine.
Fossum had appeared in three games with the Mets, including their loss on Sunday.
