Anyway you put it, Santos is a slam

042809Omir.JPGWe mentioned this on the broadcast last night but I thought I’d do a quick post before hitting the I90 to Rochester.

Omir Santos became the first Bisons player in the Modern Era to be promoted to the New York Mets. Since getting the call, he’s made quite an impact.

On the day he was activated, the backstop scored the only run in the Mets’ win and in the 9-inning, framed a pitch to get a ‘called strike three’ and promptly gunned down a runner at second for the strike ’em out – throw ’em out double play to finish off the win.

The magic continued Monday night as the Mets opened their series against the Marlins and Santos made his third start. A six run burst in the first by the Mets was capped by his first MLB homerun – a grand slam – and curtain call from the Citi Field faithful.

Since Brian Schneider could be activated off the disabled list as early as this weekend, it will be interesting to see how much of an impact Santos has had on the office brass and clubhouse. We know what he’s done on the field.

Manager Jerry Manuel told the NY Times, “I like what he gives us.”

And we like it too.
