One, to get it done

The Bisons needed only one run to earn their Thursday afternoon win over Norfolk. After scoreless baseball through the first five innings, Luis Rivera plated the Bisons lone run on Jesus Feliciano’s RBI single.

After Brandon Knight’s outing was cut short due to a 1:12 rain delay, Kyle Snyder, Jon Switzer and Elmer Dessens combined to preserve the shutout – the Bisons first of the season.

The Bisons pitching staff also faced just two over the minimum in the winning performance.

Wily Mo Pena extended his Bisons-best hit streak to 11-games with a leadoff single in the second inning. Feliciano had a pair of hits to extend his hit streak to six games. Dessens earned the save, he’s 7-for-7 in consecutive save opportunities. Luis Rivera, called up from high-A St. Lucie is 3-5 since arriving to the club.

Buffalo looks for the series win against Norfolk on Friday at 7:15 p.m. Lance Broadway will make his first start for the Bisons since being acquired by the Mets.

TODAY’S GAME: This afternoon, the Buffalo Bisons face the Norfolk Tides in the third game of a four-game series at Harbor Park (12:15 p.m.). The series is tied a game apiece as the Herd won 4-2 on Tuesday and the Tides struck for a 5-3 win last night. Buffalo is now 2-4 on their eight-game roadtrip. After Friday’s game, the Bisons will return home for an eight-game homestand against Indianapolis and Durham.

VS. TIDES: The Bisons and Tides have played six games against each other with each team collecting three wins. The teams split a four-game set back at Coca-Cola Field, May 8-11. With only two games left, Buffalo needs to win them both for the season-series victory. The Bisons have lost a season-series against Norfolk only once since rejoining the I.L. in 1998 (2008, 3-4 vs. Tides).

HITTING 10: OF Wily Mo Pena became the first Bisons player to record a 10-game hit streak this season. The slugger went 1-4 with an RBI last night and is now hitting .325 (13-40) since his streak began on May 25. During the streak, Pena has also collected a double, two home runs and six RBI. The streak has raised his average 48 points from .200 to .248.

ROSTER MOVES: Just prior to last night’s game, the Bisons received two more players. INF Luis Rivera was promoted from St. Lucie (A) and had two hits in his Triple-A debut last night. The Mets also signed OF Matt Watson and assigned him to the Bisons. Watson, who was playing with Doosan Bears in the Korean Baseball League, hit .290 (73-252) with five home runs and 30RBI in 76 games with Syracuse last season.

DONE LIKE DESSENS: RHP Elmer Dessens has converted his last six save opportunities. On the year, the veteran has struck out 19 batters and allowed just 17 hits in 26.2 innings of work. Opponents are hitting just .183 off him.

UNHAPPY LIST: The Bisons have seven players on the disabled list: RHP Dillon Gee, INF Andy Green, INF Mark Kiger, OF Bobby Kielty, RHP Carlos Muniz, C Mike Nickeas and INF Argenis Reyes. On the year, the Bisons have already lost 161 man-games to injury. With his appearance last night, INF Luis Rivera became the 47th player in 51 games to suit up for the Bisons.

Tides take a 5-3 win

After trailing 3-0 the Bisons rallied for three in the top of the eighth against Norfolk but the Tides’ Jolbert Cabrera cracked a 2-run double in the home eighth to lead Norfolk to a 5-3 win.

Wily Mo Pena extended his hit streak to a Bisons’ best 10 games with an RBI hit in the eighth. Buffalo and Norfolk meet again at 12:15 p.m. Thursday for game three of the series.

Buffalo is looking for revenge as Norfolk won the season series, 4-3 in 2008. It was the only time the Bisons lost the season series to the Tides since rejoining the International League in 1998.

UNLUCKY 10: It’s now OF Wily Mo Pena’s turn to try for a 10-game hit streak. Pena has hit in nine straight games, averaging .333 (12-36) with a double, two home runs and five RBI. Two Bisons players have already seen nine-game hit streaks end this roadtrip. OF Cory Sullivan hit .457 (16-35) in nine games before going 0-4 last night. INF Javier Valentin had a nine-game hit streak May 23-31 (.324, 11-34) before being held hitless on Monday.

THREE-FOR-THREE: RHP Fernando Nieve is a perfect 3-0 in his first three starts with the Bisons. Nieve was promoted from Binghamton (AA) on May 18 and has given the Herd three consecutive quality starts. Nieve has struck out 18 and allowed just 13 hits in 18.1 innings of work. Right-handed batters are hitting just .125 (4-32) off him so far this season.

Figueroa fantastic

The Bisons and Nelson Figueroa finally got a few breaks to go their way Tuesday Night at Harbor Park in Norfolk, VA as they knocked off the first-place Tides 4-2.

Figueroa cruised through the majority of his 114 pitch outing, the only run coming on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. He walked only one, scattered six hits and struck out three Tides’ hitters in his longest outing of the season.

Wily Mo Pena extended his hit streak to a Bisons season high nine games with his RBI single in the first inning. Pena is now hitting .333 (12-for-36) with five RBI during the streak…INF Javier Valentin left the game in the fifth inning with a sore right shoulder.
