Bisons fall in 12th
The Bisons dropped the last game of the series with Charlotte in 12 innings on Thursday night at Knights Stadium, 4-3.
After the Knights tied the game in the seventh inning neither team could push across a run until the third inning of extra baseball. After pitching two innings in yesterday’s win John Lujan was called on in the 11th inning to keep the Knights off the score board. He retired the side in order, and returned for the bottom of the 12th inning.
Lujan gave up a leadoff walk to Alejandro De Aza and a sacrifice bunt to Jim Gallagher to put De Aza on second with one out. With Mark Teahen coming to the plate manager Tim Teufel brought in reliever Justin Hampson.
Hampson threw just one pitch that Teahen smoked into center-field. De Aza running for home beat the throw and the tag to score the game winning run and a series split with the Bisons.
This was the fifth time in 2011 that the Bisons have gone into extra innings. The Herd is, 3-2, when extra baseball is played, both loses have come on the road.
The Bisons would have had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the ninth but Jesus Feliciano bumped into manager Tim Teufel rounding third before heading back to the base. A runner who bumps into a base coach is automatically out. The play ended any chance for the Bisons to score in the ninth.
The Bisons two run lead faded in the sixth and seventh inning as the Knights tacked on two runs to tie the game at, 3-3. Dallas McPherson hit a solo-homerun to bring the Knights within one in the sixth inning.
In the seventh Andrew Garcia leadoff the inning with a walk and would come around to score after back-to-back bunts by Eduardo Escobar and Alejandro De Aza. The Knights loaded the bases for the second time in the game but only managed to come away with only one run.
The Bison had built a, 3-1, lead on two sacrifice flies in the first and sixth inning and back-to-back doubles in the fourth by Valentino Pascucci and Jason Botts.
Game Notes:: Luis Figueroa extended his hit streak to five games with a single in the first inning…The Knights left the bases loaded two times on Thursday night…The Bisons have a, 3-2, record when playing extra-inning games, both loses have come on the road.
