Homers hurt Herd

Erik Kratz did it to the Herd on Saturday.  Jeff Larish was at it on Sunday afternoon.

The IronPigs first baseman hit a pair of home runs to power Lehigh Valley to a 7-5 victory over the Herd at Coca-Cola Field. The Bisons rallied late, but have now lost two straight, falling to 7-11 on the young season.

It was Larish’s two-run home run that proved to be the difference in a 7-5 IronPigs win on Saturday in a game the Bisons led twice. The same scenario played out an afternoon later.

Buffalo had taken a 2-1 lead in the second inning thanks to a two-run double from catcher Raul Chavez. But Lehigh Valley answered right back to tie the game on Jeff Frandsen’s third-inning sacrifice fly. Two batters later, Larish crushed a Jenrry Mejia offering to straight away centerfield for a game-changing three-run home run.

Larish provided more insurance in the eighth inning with a solo shot off reliever Dale Thayer. The slugger now has six home runs and 11RBI already this season.

The Bisons had their chances to get back into the game with base runners in every inning since the second. However, Buffalo didn’t score until a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth that was too little, too late.

The loss went to Mejia, his second in as many starts. The young righty allowed five runs in six innings of work.

BISONS NOTES: Kirk Nieuwenhuis doubled twice to extend his hit streak to a league-best 14 games. The outfielder has reached base in all 18 Bisons games this season…Raul Chavez has six RBI with only four hits this season…Jonathan Malo made his 2011 Bisons debut when he flew out as a pinch hitter in the sxith inning.
