After back-to-back shutouts in Saturday’s double header, the Bisons finally saw the opposition put a run on the board. Jeff Larish crushed a solo homerun in the second inning to give the Mud Hens the 1-0 edge.

Toledo would strike again in the next inning. The Mud Hens put together a two-out rally in the third, plating three runs , taking the 4-0 advantage. Scott Sizemore plated two on an RBI double and Jeff Larish singled in another for his second RBI of the day.

TODAY’S GAME: This afternoon, the Buffalo Bisons host the Toledo Mud Hens in the finale of a four-game series from Coca-Cola Field (1:05 p.m.). The Herd is looking for the series win after sweeping Saturday night’s doubleheader, 1-0 and 2-0. Buffalo has now won six of their last eight games. Tomorrow, the Bisons start an eight-game roadtrip to Louisville and Indianapolis.

vs. THE HENS: The Bisons are 2-1 against Toledo this year, thanks to last night’s doubleheader sweep. Buffalo won the season-series a year ago, 5-3, thanks to a series win at Fifth Third Field. The Bisons have not lost a set to the Mud Hens at Coca-Cola Field since the 2003 season (one win and four splits).

SHUTOUTS: Last night was the first time the Bisons swept a doubleheader with a pair of shutouts since June 15, 2006 in Durham with LHP Jeremy Sowers and RHP Ronald “Bear” Bay doing the honors in 3-0 and 4-0 wins. The last time Buffalo accomplished the feat at home was August 14, 1997 as the Bisons took a pair of 8-0 wins against Indianapolis.

TAKAHASHI: LHP Ken Takahashi will make his third start with the Bisons today. The 40-year old rookie had a 0.95ERA in nine relief appearances to begin his Triple-A career. In his two starts since joining the rotation on July 7, the southpaw is 0-1 with a 0.82ERA. On the Sunday before the All-Star break, Takahashi allowed just one earned run in five innings in a 3-2 defeat to Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre.

STRONG ARMS: The Bisons pitching staff has been tremendous over the last 10 days. Since July 8, Herd hurlers have posted a 1.48ERA with only 45 hits allowed in 67.0 innings of work. Buffalo has three complete games in their last eight, with the honors going to RHP Lance Broadway, LHP Jonathon Niese and RHP Nelson Figueroa.

NIESE-LY DONE: LHP Jonathon Niese tossed his second complete-game shutout last night. He becomes the 16th Bisons pitcher to have two shutouts in a single season in the Modern Era, and only the third southpaw. Jeremy Sowers was the last two do it in 2006 while lefty Bryan Clark also had a pair of shutouts during the 1986 season at War Memorial Stadium.

ROSTER MOVE: The Bisons have activated INF Andy Green from the team’s disabled list today. Green missed 68 games with a fractured left thumb. INF Luis Rivera has been transferred to St. Lucie (A).

A Bisons blog wasn’t even available when the Bisons tossed back-to-back shutouts in a twin-bill at Coca-Cola Field. Nearly 12 years have passed since Buffalo blanked Indianapolis 8-0 in both games during the 1997 season. That night Sean Casey was the star, hitting three homers between the two games. Tonight, pitching became the buzz at the ballpark.

In game one, Jonathon Niese dominated Toledo during a 1-0 win and in the nightcap it was Nelson Figueroa’s mastery that leads to the 2-0 blank versus the ‘Hens.

The teams will play two tonight after rain forced a postponement on Friday. Toledo won the opening game of this four-game set on Thursday night, 6-2. After tomorrow’s series finale, the Bisons will have an eight-game roadtrip to Louisville and Indy.

vs. THE HENS: The Bisons are 0-1 against Toledo this year, having only played on Thursday night against the IL West opponent. Buffalo won the season-series a year ago, 5-3, thanks to a series win at Fifth Third Field. NIESE-LY DONE: LHP Jonathon Niese looks to continue his hot streak as he takes the mound tonight for his 16th start of the season. The southpaw is a perfect 4-0 in his last five starts. In this stretch, Niese has an astonishing 0.83ERA, with only 10 walks to 40 strikeouts. He has only allowed four earned runs over his last 43.1 innings pitched. This season, the pitcher has a Bisons-leading 80 strikeouts to only 24 walks.

OH NELLY: IL All-Star RHP Nelson Figueroa has been one of the league’s most consistent pitchers. His 2.50ERA is tied for the 4th lowest in the IL. The veteran has allowed more than two runs in just two of his 14 starts and more than three runs only once. He has won five decisions in a row and has a 1.64ERA in seven starts since the beginning of June. On Wednesday night, Figueroa pitched a scoreless 8th inning with two strikeouts in the IL’s 6-5 win over the Pacific Coast League in the Triple-A All-Star Game.

MR. DEPENDABLE: OF Jesus Feliciano has been the most consistent hitter for the Herd all season. The outfielder continued to swing a hot bat with three hits in Thursday night’s game. Feliciano currently has an eight-game hitting streak in which he has batted 12-31 with a .387 average. The Bison slugger currently leads the team in batting average (.308), RBI (34), as well as stolen bases (11). His .308 average is also good for 10th best in the IL.

Friday’s game between the Buffalo Bisons and the Toledo Mud Hens at Coca-Cola Field has been postponed due to rain.

The teams will make up the game as part of a doubleheader on Saturday, July 18 (Game 1: 5:35 p.m.). Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. The teams will play two, seven-inning games that day.

The Bisons Family Camp Out scheduled for Friday night has been postponed until Friday, August 14 (7:35 p.m. game). For more information on the Camp Out, fans can call (716) 846-2018.

Fans holding tickets to Friday’s game can exchange them for a comparable ticket to any future 2009 Bisons games (excluding special events). All ticket exchanges must be made at the Coca-Cola Field box office. Please note that these exchanges do not have to be made on Friday, July 17. Fans with tickets can exchange them throughout the remainder of the 2009 season.
