TODAY’S GAME: This afternoon, the Buffalo Bisons take on the Rochester Red Wings in the finale of a three-game set at Frontier Field (1:35 p.m.). The series is tied 1-1 as the Bisons won 8-7 on Friday and the Wings were victorious last night, 5-2. The Bisons are 3-5 so far on their season-long nine-game roadtrip that ends today. On Monday, the Bisons return to Buffalo for their final four home games of the 2009 season.

vs. THE WINGS: The Bisons are 5-8 against the Red Wings this season. The teams will face each other the next three days to close out their season series. Unless the Bisons win all three games, they lose the season-series for only the third time since rejoining the International League in 1998.

MASONRY: RHP Chris Mason impressed in his Bisons debut on Tuesday. The righty threw seven shutout innings in a 4-0 blanking of the Yankees in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Mason allowed just five hits while striking out three in his outing. Even more impressive was Mason’s 17 groundball outs to only one fly ball out in his 93-pitch performance.

HIT MACHINE: The International League hit competition continues to be a two-man race. Both OF Jesus Feliciano and Gwinnett’s INF Barbaro Canizares got a hit last night. That means Canizares kept his one-hit lead, 141-140. Feliciano’s hit extended his hit streak to nine as he has averaged .389 (14-36) since August 21. The nine games matches Feliciano’s longest hit streak of the season as he also hit in nine straight, July 24 – August 1.

GO GREEN: INF Andy Green launched his fourth home run of the season last night with a two-run shot in the ninth inning. Green has hit in 11 of his last 13 games around a 10-day stint with the New York Mets. Since August 9, Green has averaged .358 (19-53) with three doubles, a home run, nine RBI and six runs scored. Green has missed 79 games this year due to a pair of injuries.

BISONS BITS: C Robinson Cancel has hit .455 (10-22) in seven games against the Red Wings this season…The Bisons have just 10 games left this season. Buffalo has a doubleheader on September 4 in Lehigh Valley.

Herd clipped by 'Wings

The Bisons must have thought they were catching a break when Wings’ scheduled starter, Yohan Pino, who had an ERA under three in eight starts for Rochester, was dealt to Cleveland on Friday.

After collecting just five hits in eight-plus innings off fill-in starter Jason Jones, the Herd wished the deal never went down. The Bisons didn’t get to the right-hander until the ninth-inning but by then it was to late as the Wings beat the Herd 5-2 Saturday night at Frontier Field.

READ: FULL STORY!

The Bisons look to win the series Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. The Herd will send Chris Mason to the mound looking for a repeat performance of his first start when he threw seven shutout innings against Scranton.

vs. THE WINGS: The Bisons are 5-7 against their closest rivals so far this season. That record does include an even 3-3 mark at Frontier Field. The Herd has not won a series against Rochester in 2009, earning just one split of a four-game set at Frontier Field, July 4-6. Dating back to last season, the Bisons are just 6-16 in their last 22 games against the Red Wings.

ROSTER MOVE: RHP Jose Sanchez will make his Triple-A debut tonight after his promotion from St. Lucie (A) today. Sanchez began the year at Binghamton (AA), where he was 1-6 with a 6.88ERA in 10 starts. The 25-year old has made 66 career appearances at the Double-A level in the past three seasons, all with the B-Mets. Sanchez was 13-7 with a 3.83ERA in 29 games and 26 starts with Binghamton in 2008.

MOUND WORK: Bisons starting pitchers continued their strong stretch of work as LHP Adam Pettyjohn earned the win last night. In the team’s last 11 games, the rotation has combined to post a 2.45ERA. Herd starters have allowed just 17 runs in 62.1 innings with 42 strikeouts to only 13 walks.

NOT SO PETTY: LHP Adam Pettyjohn is 2-3 with a 3.00ERA in his six appearances for the Herd. The southpaw pitched well enough to win on Sunday against the Yankees as he allowed just two runs in seven innings in a 2-1 defeat to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. However, Feliciano fell one back of Gwinnett’s Barbaro Canizares for the league lead in hits. Canizares had two hits last night, so his total of 139 is just ahead of Feliciano’s 138. Feliciano still leads the Bisons in runs (51), doubles (29) and stolen bases (12).

HOMERING HERD: The Bisons got their 23rd home run in August last night as INF Javier Castillo went deep for the Herd. The blast was Castillo’s seventh on the year and his fifth with the Bisons.
