The Herd and Chiefs split a doubleheader Friday night for the second day in a row at Coca-Cola Field. The Bisons slugged their way to a 7-2 game one win but missed some opportunities in game two as Syracuse came back to take the nightcap, 2-1.

Buffalo hits the road for a nine-game road trip and returns to Coca-Cola Field for the final four home games of the season on August 30.

BISONS NOTES:
LHP Derrick Ellison has been promoted to the Bisons from Binghamton (AA). Ellison, 29, signed with the Mets on August 14 and pitched three games with Binghamton. He did not allow a run or a hit in 6.2 innings of work (1-0 record, 2BB, 2K). He began the year with Huntsville (AA) of the Milwaukee Brewers organization and went 2-2 with a 4.45ERA and two saves in 19 games (28.1IP, 21H, 18G, 14ER, 15BB, 26K)

TODAY’S GAME: Tonight, the Buffalo Bisons host the Syracuse Chiefs in the second double-header of a four-game in two-day series from Coca-Cola Field (Game 1: 6:35 p.m.). The Bisons split the first pair of games yesterday, losing game 1, 3-0, and winning game 2, 2-0. After tonight’s games, the Herd visits Scranton/Wilkes-Barre August 23-25 for the start of a nine-game roadtrip.

vs. THE CHIEFS: The Bisons are just 3-11 against Syracuse this year. The Chiefs have three series sweeps of the Herd: April 17-19 (3G), April 24-27 (4G) and August 18-19 (2G). The Bisons collected a 2-1 series victory at Alliance Bank Stadium from June 15-16 (DH on June 15).

TONIGHT’S STARTERS: RHP Tobi Stoner will take the mound for the Bisons in Game 1, and RHP Tim McNab will start Game 2 of tonight’s doubleheader. Stoner is coming off one of his best starts of the year. The righty only allowed four hits in 6.0 shutout innings of work against Lehigh Valley on August 16. McNab only has one start on the season -May 15 vs Gwinnett- in which he allowed two runs while striking out two in 3.1 innings of work.

QUICK WORK: LHP Ken Takahashi collected his first North American win in record fashion yesterday. The southpaw threw a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits while striking out six Chiefs’ batters. The win took just one hour and 21 minutes, the shortest game in the Bisons Modern Era. The previous shortest was 3-1 win over Denver in one hour and 22 minutes on May 17, 1992. Takahashi needed just 71 pitches to complete his gem.

BIG BAT: INF/OF Nick Evans is hitting .295 (23-78) in 21 games in August. Twelve of his 23 total hits have gone for extra-bases as Evans has six doubles, two triples and four home runs to go along with 14RBI this month. He has a .577 slugging percentage in August. Going back to July, 19 of Evans’ last 38 hits have gone for extra-bases (10 doubles, 3 triples, 6 home runs).

DUBOIS MAKES NOISE: OF Jason Dubois had a stellar performance for the Herd at the plate in Game 2 of the double-header yesterday. The veteran went 2-2 while tattooing his second homerun in his return stint with the Bisons. Dubois homered 22 times for the Herd during the 2006 campaign.

The Bisons split a double-dip on Thursday afternoon with the Chiefs, posting 2-0 win in the nightcap. Nick Evans drove home a run in the first and Jason Dubios added a solo shot in the fifth inning during the win.

Syracuse blanked the Herd 3-0 in the opener. Seth Bynum and Daryl Ward each had homers.

The Bisons and Chiefs will play two on Friday night, the first begins at 6:05 p.m.

HOT BAT: INF Javier Castillo has hit in four straight games for the Herd. He collected two more hits last night and now has seven hits in his last 13 at-bats (a .538 average). The stretch has given him 25 doubles on the year between his time in Buffalo and in Charlotte. OF Jesus Feliciano leads all Bisons hitters with 27 doubles this season.

SOLID SOUTHPAW: LHP Pat Misch collected his first Bisons win his last time out. The lefty hurled six innings and allowed just three runs (two earned) on five hits in a victory over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Saturday. Misch has made three starts for the Herd and worked six innings in each of them. His only loss was a complete game effort in the first game of a doubleheader in Syracuse on June 15.

BISONS BITS: LHP Ken Takahashi is 0-3 in six starts despite posting a very solid 3.62ERA as a starter…OF Chip Ambres (10 games) and INF Mike Lamb (6 games) both saw their hit streaks end last night.

TODAY’S GAME: This afternoon, the Buffalo Bisons take on the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in the third game of a four-game set from Coca-Cola Field (1:05p.m.). The series is tied at a game apiece following the Herd’s 7-5 victory last night. The Bisons are 6-4 in their last 10 games. After tomorrow’s series finale, the Herd travels to Syracuse for a two-game set with the Chiefs.

vs. THE I-PIGS: The Herd is 3-6 against Lehigh Valley this season. The Bisons lost a three-game set in Lehigh Valley (2-1) from May 5-7 and a four-game set here at Coca-Cola Field, May 25-28 (3-1). The Bisons have gone 7-7 (.500) at home against the I-Pigs since Lehigh Valley’s arrival in the IL in 2008.

HITTIN’ HERD: The Bisons offense has averaged .305 in the first 15 games of August -seven points better than any other team in the International League. The Bisons are scoring 5.5 runs/game this month and have launched 14 home runs in 15 games (3rd most in IL). Seven different Bisons hitters are averaging .314 or better in the month, led by INF Argenis Reyes (.413), INF Wilson Valdez (.366) and INF Andy Green (.328).

THE REY TO BE: INF Argenis Reyes has ramped up his hit streak. Not only has he hit in 14-straight games, he has three consecutive three-hit games. Since the streak began on August 1, Reyes has averaged .413 (26-63) with two doubles, a triple, a home run, seven RBI and eight runs scored. It’s the second-longest active hit streak in the IL (IND Brian Bixler, 15) and the second-longest for a Bisons player this season. (INF Javier Castillo, 16 games June 26 – July 12).

HIT STREAKIN: Other Bisons hitting streaks include INF Andy Green, who has averaged .455 (15-33) over the last seven games. Also at seven games is OF Chip Ambres, who has averaged .407 (11-27) since August 9. Ambres has four doubles, a home run and seven RBI in seven games this homestand.

HALL OF FAME: Prior to today’s game, former INF/Coach Carlos Garcia and former INF Dave Hollins will be inducted into the Buffalo Baseball Hall of Fame. Garcia was an American Association All-Star in 1992 and Hitting Coach for the Herd’s 2004 Governors’ Cup Championship. Hollins slugged 112 big league home runs before joining the Herd in 2000-2001. Greats “Rube” Kisinger and Joe Knight will also be inducted into the IL Hall of Fame.
