Bisons bounce Braves
The Bisons ended their three-game losing streak on Tuesday night using the big stick to get a 6-3 win at Coolray Field over the Gwinnett Braves.
After Gwinnett took a 3-1 lead in the second inning, the Herd brought out the long ball to tie the game and then take the lead.
After a lead off base hit from Jorge Padilla in the fourth inning, Valentino Pascucci struck a two-run bomb over the left field wall for his eighth homer of the year to tie the game at three.
Then with two men on in the fifth frame, Jorge Padilla knocked his first home run of the year as a Bison, after four long balls with Triple-A Las Vegas. The three-run homer gave the Bisons a 6-3 lead, which they would hold on for the final score.
Bisons starter Pat Misch got the win after losing his previous two starts, going eight innings and surrendering only three runs on 10 hits, to improve his record to 6-3.
The offense star of the game was the newcomer Jorge Padilla, playing in just his fourth game with Buffalo, he went 3-5 with two runs scored, three RBI, and the game-changing home run.
The Bisons look to keep on rolling tomorrow night in game three of the series from Coolray Field, with a 7 p.m. start time.

TODAY’S GAME: Tonight, the Buffalo Bisons take on the Gwinnett Braves in the second game of a four-game series at Coolray Field (7:05 p.m.) The Herd lost the series opener to the Braves last night, 7-2. The defeat is the third consecutive loss for Buffalo. After this four-game series, the Bisons will travel to Charlotte for a four-game series starting Friday June 25.
MOUND WORK: LHP PAT MISCH will take the mound against Gwinnett tonight. The lefty is winless in his last three starts despite pitching extremely well in his last outing, June 17 against Indy. In the start, Misch allowed just two earned runs in seven innings of work with four strikeouts, but the Indians won 2-0. The Bisons are still 9-4 when Misch starts for the team.
BURNIN’ TURNER: INF JUSTIN TURNER went 3-4 with a walk in last night’s defeat. It was Turner’s seventh multi-hit performance in 23 games since joining the Bisons on May 27. Overall, Turner has a hit in 19 of the 23 games with Buffalo and has failed to reach base in only one game (July 17 vs. Indy). Turner has a .388 on-base percentage as a Bison.
HITTING MACHINE: INF MIKE JACOBS was 2-4 with a run, an RBI and a walk in last night’s game. Jacobs has reached base seven times over the last three games. The slugger is 4-12 (.333) at the plate with three walks since Saturday. His RBI last night was his 33rd of the season, second on the team behind only INF MIKE HESSMAN.
LEFTY MIKE: LHP MIKE O’CONNOR has made five consecutive scoreless appearances for the Herd. During the stretch, the lefty has allowed just three hits while striking out seven batters in 6.2 innings of work. On the season, O’Connor has retired the first batter he’s faced in 21 of his 25 outings (84%) and has only allowed five of 21 inherited runners to score (24%).
BISONS BITS: OF JORGE PADILLA recorded the Bisons 17th outfield assist last night…The Bisons drew a season-high eight walks last night. The Bisons entered Monday’s game with only 182 free passes, the fewest in the International League.
METS UPDATE: The Mets (39-30) had the day off yesterday. Tonight, New York will host the Detroit Tigers for the first game of a three-game series (7:10 p.m.). Former Bison LHP JON NIESE will take the mound for tonight’s game. Niese has won three straight starts, having allowed just four total runs in his last 23.0 innings of work. G-Braves get win in opener
The Gwinnett Braves handed the Bisons their third straight loss when the Herd was defeated 7-2 tonight at Coolray Field.
The Braves scored early and often and forced the Bisons to play catch-up for the remainder of the game. The Herd could not match the offense put up by the Braves and were able to only muster two runs in the losing effort.
The home squad got to starting pitcher Dylan Owen in the first inning when they pounced on the right hander for two early runs. The Braves then came back strong in the second inning, scoring four runs and sending eight batters to the plate. The Braves also collected six hits during the inning.
Owen was then removed from the game during the top of the sixth when he was next in the lineup with men on the corners and two outs. In an attempt to chip away at the lead, Andy Green was sent to the plate to pinch hit for Owen. Unfortunately Green was unable to produce any runs as he failed to check his swing to strikeout for the third out.
At the time when Owen was removed from the game he had retired ten consecutive batters and had sat down the side in order in three consecutive innings. After his shaky first two innings Owen had settled down and was able to go on his streak of consecutive batters retired by not allowing a hit from the third to fifth inning. For the day the starter went five innings while tying his season high for earned runs allowed with six after throwing only 73 pitches.
The Bisons saw the Braves do the majority of their damage at the plate with the one through four hitters. The Braves first four in the lineup went a combined 8-15 on the night with four RBI.
The lack of offense by the Herd was primarily due to the start from Braves pitcher Tim Gustafson. The Braves starter held the Bisons bats in check during his five innings of work. Gustafson limited the Bisons to only five hits in six innings of work and gave up only one run.
The Herd finally threatened the Braves in the ninth inning. Buffalo was able to load the bases but it was too little too late. The Herd was only able to get one run from the threat when first baseman Mike Jacobs singled to left to score left fielder Jonathan Malo.
With the loss the Herd’s record now stands at 36-35 while being 14-19 away from Coca-Cola Field. The win for the Braves improves their record to 33-38.
BISONS NOTES: With a loss tomorrow the Bisons record would be .500 for the first time since they were 3-3 on April 13. Shortstop Justin Turner and first baseman Mike Jacobs were the only Bisons with a multi-hit game by going 3-4 and 2-4 on the day respectively. The Bisons will continue their series with the Braves tomorrow when left hander Pat Misch (5-3, 3.50 ERA) takes on Jo-Jo Reyes (1-4, 4.23 ERA).
