TODAY’S GAME: This afternoon, the Buffalo Bisons host the Louisville Bats (Cincinnati Reds) for the final game a four-game series from Coca-Cola Field (1:05 p.m.). Down 2-1, the Herd needs a win today to earn a split of the set with the Bats. After today, the Bisons will travel to Lehigh Valley for a four-game series against the IronPigs.

K-MAN: RHP Brandon Knight has given the Bisons back-to-back quality starts in his last two outings. He allowed just three runs in six innings on April 18 in Syracuse and held the Chiefs to three runs in seven innings on April 24. Knight has averaged better than a strikeout per inning with 20 punchouts in only 18 innings of work. He has fanned at least five in all three of his starts this year.

INSTANT IMPACT: INF/OF Wily Mo Pena has been a big addition to the team’s lineup. The veteran has hit in all four games he’s played in, averaging .385 (5-13). On Friday, he hit a monster three-run homerun in just his second game with the team. He went 1-2 (R, BB) and 1-3 in yesterday’s doubleheader.

ON THE CHARTS: RHP Dillon Gee’s complete game yesterday is one of only four complete efforts in the International League so far. OF Fernando Martinez hit his ninth double of the year to tie him with Norfolk’s Oscar Salaza for the IL lead. Martinez also homered yesterday, giving him 12 extra-base hits in 2009. That total is tied for 5th in the IL.

SMOOTH CRIMINALS: The Bisons were a perfect 4-4 stealing bases yesterday. INF Argenis Reyes picked up his team-best fourth steal while INF Jose Coronado, OF Jason Cooper and C Robinson Cancel all took an extra base. As a team, the Bisons have 13 steals in 15 attempts for an 87% success rate.

GLOVE WORK: The Bisons are second in the International League with a .982 team fielding percentage. The club is tied for 1st in the IL in fewest errors (14) and tied for 2nd in most doubleplays (23).

ROSTER MOVE: The Bisons have added RHP Tim McNab to their bullpen. The 28-year old was 0-0 with a 3.27ERA in eight games with Binghamton (AA). Last year, McNab was 3-3 with a 5.55ERA in 50 games and one start for New Orleans (AAA).

Saturday split for Bisons, Bats

050209_gee.JPGThe Bisons and Bats split their Saturday twin bill with a pair of firsts for two starters. The Bisons took the first game 5-1 behind the work of Dillon Gee. In just his third season of professional baseball, the 23-year old tossed his first complete game.

Home Bailey started the night-cap and shutout the Bisons in a 2-0 Louisville win. For Bailey, it was his first complete game shutout, spanning back to the 2004 season.

TODAY’S GAME: This afternoon, the Buffalo Bisons host the Louisville Bats (Cincinnati Reds) for the second and third games a four-game series from Coca-Cola Field (Game 1 – 1:05 p.m.). After a rainout on Thursday, the teams tried to play two last night. However, after the Bats one the first game, 4-3, the second game had to be postponed because of rain. After Sunday, the Bisons will travel to Lehigh Valley for a four-game series against the IronPigs.

NEWBIE: Tim McNab, 28, was 0-0 with a 3.27ERA in eight relief outings with the B-Mets (11.0IP, 12H, 4R, 4ER, 1BB, 4K). He has made four consecutive scoreless appearances, April 24-30, in a stretch that has covered 3.2 innings of work. On the season, right-handed batters are hitting just .167 (4-24) off him. Originally selected in the 22nd round of the 2002 draft by New York, McNab was 3-3 with a 5.55ERA in 50 games (1 start) for New Orleans (AAA) last season (73.0IP, 75H, 52R, 45ER, 26BB, 39K).

LET’S PLAY TWO: The Bisons will try again to play their first doubleheader of the season. The Herd had one win and three splits in seven twinbills last year. The one sweep came almost a year ago today, May 4 against the Charlotte Knights (6-4, 1-0).

NEW SLUGGER: In just his second game with the team, INF Wily Mo Pena showed the powerful impact he can have in the Herd’s lineup. The slugger hit a monster three-run opposite field homerun in the 5th inning yesterday. Pena now has three hits in his first eight Bisons at-bats.

HOT BAT: OF Jesus Feliciano had two more hits yesterday and now has five hits in his last eight at-bats. Feliciano’s team-high average now sits at .297. His 19 total hits and five multi-hit games are second only to OF Fernando Martinez (20 hits, 7 multi-hit games) on the team.

THE RIGHT REY: INF Argenis Reyes is in the midst of a nice stretch at the plate. He went 2-2 in last night’s game and has now hit in three straight (.500, 5-10). Reyes has reached base in 12 of the 14 games he’s played in and leads the team with a .392 on-base percentage. He’s also second on the club in average (.279) and walks (8).

CLOSE CALLS: The Bisons lost by one run for the seventh time this year. Six of those one-run losses have come at Coca-Cola Field. In fact, 10 of the team’s 17 losses have been by two runs or less.

NIESE’S OUTING: LHP Jonathon Niese had his best outing as a Bison last night. The southpaw allowed just one run on three hits in six innings of work. His eight strikeouts were just one shy of a team-high set by LHP Casey Fossum (4/17). In his six innings, Niese allowed just four more than the minimum.

More rain, ugh
