The International League announced today that Gwinnett outfielder Matt Young and Charlotte pitcher Carlos Torres have been named the League’s Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from June 21-27. Torres is now the 9th man ever to win three IL Pitcher of the Week Awards in the same season, joining Armando Reynoso (Richmond, 1991), Brian Rose (Pawtucket, 1997), Nerio Rodriguez (Syracuse, 1999), Shane Loux (Toledo, 2002), Josh Hancock (Scranton/WB, 2003), Jae Seo (Durham, 2007), Virgil Vasquez (Toledo, 2007), and Justin Lehr (Lehigh Valley & Louisville, 2009).

IL BATTER OF THE WEEK: MATT YOUNG, Gwinnett Braves
Gwinnett’s Matt Young led the International League with 10 runs scored during the past week, and he tied for the League lead in hits (15), batting average (.556), and on-base percentage (.600). Young collected multiple hits in each of the six games in which he started this week, including banging out three hits in three straight games from Wednesday to Friday. He also scored multiple runs in four games, including two three-run performances. His hot bat has pushed his batting average above .300 for the first time this season, vaulting him into the League’s top ten in hitting.

27-year-old Matt Young is in his sixth season of professional baseball, all coming within the Braves organization. His first taste of Triple-A came last September, when he ecorded a hit in each of his first three games with Gwinnett. Young is a native of Temple, Texas.

IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK: CARLOS TORRES, Charlotte Knights
For the third time this season, Charlotte’s Carlos Torres is the International League Pitcher of the Week. Torres won both of his starts this week, allowing just two runs and eight hits in a total of 14.0 innings, while walking three and striking out twelve. Monday night in Syracuse, Torres was dominant against the IL North leaders, despite being in the difficult position of facing a team for a second consecutive start. Torres surrendered two hits and a walk in 7.0 strong innings, striking out seven Chiefs as the Knights cruised to a 6-1 victory.

Torres got his second win of the week, and sixth this season, back home against Buffalo on Saturday night. The Bisons got two runs off of him in the 5th, but Torres was otherwise stingy and Charlotte pulled out a 3-2 win. Torres now finds himself among
the IL leaders on the year in ERA (8th), strikeouts (4th), and innings pitched (2nd).

27-year-old Carlos Torres is in his sixth season as a professional pitcher, all coming within the White Sox organization. In 2009 he was named by MLB.com as the Triple-A Starting Pitcher of the Year on the strength of his International League-best 2.39 ERA in 23 games for the Knights. Torres is a native of Santa Cruz, California.
