Baxter triples twice, Schwinden wins
Mike Baxter hit his first two triples as a Bison, scoring twice as the Bisons claimed a 9-6 win in the opener of a two-game road series with the Rochester Red Wings.
The win extends a winning streak to four games and gives Buffalo an 8-5 season series lead over Rochester.
In his third game back with the Bisons, Fernando Martinez rocked a two-run home run in the second inning.
However the Rochester offense quickly answered Martinez in the bottom of the inning with a two-run Chase Lambin double.
Toby Gardenhire then claimed the Wings’ only lead against starter Chris Schwinden with a single to knock in Lambin.
Josh Satin extended his hit streak to nine games and tied the game on a third-inning RBI single, scoring Baxter after Baxter’s first Buffalo triple.
The next inning, Nick Evans reclaimed the lead for Buffalo on a long home run over Frontier Field’s left field bullpen.
Jeff Bailey tied the game yet again, at 4-4, in the sixth inning with his own solo homer.
Rochester starter Andrew Baldwin left after six innings with the game still tied as Jake Stevens pitched the seventh.
With Luis Hernandez on first, Ruben Tejada attempted to bunt the runner to second, but catcher Rene Rivera’s errant throw to first base allowed Hernandez to race all the way home as Tejada took third.
Raul Chavez made it a two-run cushion on a sacrifice fly before Baxter’s second triple and Satin’s second RBI single.
Schwinden also left after six innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits and earning the win. The righthander struck out six to four walks.
Stevens allowed four runs (one earned) on five hits in one inning of work.
Valentino Pascucci went 3-for-5 with a run scored.
Rochester’s Mike Hollimon cut the lead to 9-6 with a two-run ninth-inning homer against Taylor Tankersley. Closer Dale Thayer recorded the final out, an Aaron Bates fly out to right fielder Jesus Feliciano.
Game Notes: Baxter is the first Bison with two triples in one game since Jason Cooper on August 4, 2007 in Scranton… Over the season series, Buffalo has 16 home runs to Rochester’s seven… Schwinden, 7-5, leads the Bisons in wins with Pat Misch second at two.
