TODAY’S GAME: This morning, the Bisons take on the Rochester Red Wings in the second game of a four-game series from Frontier Field (11:35 a.m.). The Bisons struck first in the series with last night’s 5-0 win. Today’s game is part of an eight-game roadtrip as the Herd will also travel to Lehigh Valley for a four-game set starting April 30.
VS. RED WINGS: The Bisons are 3-2 against the Red Wings this season. The teams split a four-game set at Coca-Cola Field, April 19-21. Dating back to last season, the Bisons have now won five straight over the Red Wings at Frontier Field. Since returning to the IL in 1998, the Herd has a 57-47 (.548) record at the home of its closest rival.
NOTHING NIEU: With home runs in back-to-back games, OF KIRK NIEUWENHUIS now has a 16-game hit streak. Since April 11, the outfielder has hit .382 (21-55) with eight doubles, three home runs and five RBI. Nieuwenhuis’s streak is six games longer than any streak in the IL this season. The outfielder is also the only player in the IL to have reached base in all of his team’s games. Nieuwenhuis has a .463 on-base percentage this year.
NICK, THE STICK: INF NICK EVANS had three extra-base hits against the Red Wings last night with two doubles and a home run. Evans also had a two-homer game against Rochester in the first game of a doubleheader on April 21. Five of his six extra-base hits on the year have come against the Wings.
ALSO STREAKING: INF LUIS HERNANDEZ has hit in six straight games. He has averaged .364 (8-22) with three runs and three RBI since April 21. INF RUBEN TEJADA also takes a six-game hit streak into today’s contest. Tejada has averaged .346 (9-26) with eight RBI in his solid stretch.
BISONS BITS: Today’s game is one of five morning starts for the Herd this season. The Bisons also have a 10:35 a.m. start in Lehigh Valley on this roadtrip, May 3…The Bisons are 2-4 on the road this season, but both road wins are shutouts. Buffalo blanked Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on April 13…The Mets announced that C RONNY PAULINO will play two more games with the Bisons on his assignment before being activated on Friday.
METS UPDATE: The Mets (10-13) won their fifth straight game with a 6-4 victory over the Nationals. Former Bisons C JOSH THOLE had three RBI while INF IKE DAVIS went 3-4 witha double and two runs scored. The win went to RHP RYOTA IGARASHI with RHP FRANCISCO RODRIGUEZ earning his fifth save of the season.
