Knights nab opener

The Buffalo Bisons lost to the Charlotte Knights 5-2 tonight in the first game of their four game series at Knights Stadium.

Buffalo starting pitcher Tobi Stoner matched his season high by pitching seven innings during his outing. Stoner gave up two runs in the second inning behind singles from Knights third baseman Brent Morel and center fielder Alejandro De Aza.

Stoner also tied a season high by giving up 11 hits to the Knights in his seven innings of work. Those 11 hits were the most since he also gave up 11 in a loss to the Durham Bulls back on June 9th.

Stoner’s counterpart, Knights right hander Daniel Hudson picked up his league-leading tenth win of the season after he only gave up five hits and two runs in his six innings pitched. Hudson who was named the MLB.com Minor League Starting Pitcher of the Year for last season is tied for most wins in Triple-A with Durham’s Jeremy Hellickson.

After Hudson was able to limit the Herd to only five hits, the Knights bullpen did not give up a hit for the remainder of the game. Those five hits would be the only ones the Bisons would get all night. The Herd’s five through nine hitters went a combined 0-18 for the game.

The highlight for the Herd came in the third inning when second baseman Russ Adams hit his fifth home run of the season. Adams took the first pitch of the at-bat deep to right field to tie the game at two.

That home run from Adams would be the last run the Herd would knock in as they were held scoreless in the final six innings. Adams also hit a double in the fifth inning and would prove to be the last hit the Herd would get during the game as they were also held hitless in the final four innings.

For the night, Adams went 2-3 while shortstop Justin Turner, center fielder Jorge Padilla and designated hitter Mike Jacobs all collected one hit a piece to give the Herd their five team hits.

The loss drops the Herd to 38-37 while the win brings the Knights to 37-39 for the season.

BISONS NOTES: Former Bisons catcher Josh Thole went 0-3 in his first major league game this season for the Mets in a 5-2 New York win. The Bisons and Knights will continue their series tomorrow night when Dylan Owen (3-3, 6.39 ERA) takes on Charlotte right hander Carlos Torres (5-5, 3.08 ERA).
