TODAY’S GAME: This afternoon, the Buffalo Bisons face the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in the first game of a four-game series from Coca-Cola Field (2:05 p.m.). The Bisons are coming off a split of a four-game series against Columbus to begin this eight-game homestand. After Thursday, the Bisons will leave for Durham on their first eight-game roadtrip of the season.

VS. IRONPIGS: The Bisons are 1-2 against Lehigh Valley this year, having lost a rain-shortened series in Allentown, PA from May 4-7. Last season, the teams split their 16-game series, with Buffalo winning five of the eight games played at Coca-Cola Field.

OLLIE JOINS HERD: LHP Oliver Perez will start his major league rehab assignment with the Bisons tomorrow. The Mets placed the southpaw on the disabled list on May 6 (retroactive to May 3) with patellar tendinitis in his right knee. Perez, who has won 25 games with the Mets over the past two seasons, was 1-2 with a 9.97ERA in five starts with New York this year.

GOSH GOLLY GEE: RHP Dillon Gee is back on the mound today, having his most recent start pushed back a couple days because of an illness. Gee last pitched on May 17 in Pawtucket and threw 6.1 shutout innings in a no-decision. In his last two starts, Gee has allowed just one run on six hits in 13.1 innings of work. In those two starts, Gee has struck out a combined 15 batters, including a season-high eight against the Red Sox.

SECRET VALENTIN: C/INF Javier Valentin snapped a 2-2 tie yesterday with yet another RBI-single. The veteran has reached safely in eight of his first 10 games as a Bison with seven of his 10 hits driving in runs. Overall, Valentin has hit .333 (10-30) with three home runs and eight RBI. He has hit .444 (4-9) with runners in scoring position.

F-MART: OF Fernando Martinez extended his hit streak to six-games yesterday, matching a Bisons season-high. He has averaged .400 (10-25) with three doubles, three home runs, six RBI and six runs scored since Monday, May 18. Martinez is tied for 1st in the International League with 24 extra-base hits.

A win and a split

The Buffalo Bisons posted a 5-3 win over the Columbus Clippers on Sunday afternoon. The victory gave the Herd a series split leading into a four game series against Lehigh Valley.

Fernando Nieve remained perfect on the mound for the Bisons in two starts. The righty allowed just two runs in six innings of work.

Bisons hold off Clippers

The Buffalo Bisons fought off two come from behind rallies by the Columbus Clippers on Saturday afternoon. Javier Valentin gave the Herd their final jolt with an eighth inning go-ahead homer to win 4-3, stopping a 5-game win streak for the Clippers.

Nelson Figueroa returned to the mound, tossing six solid innings and surrendering just two runs while punching out seven batters.

Strawberry is here

052309_straw.JPGThe Bisons welcome Darryl Strawberry to the ballpark on today (Saturday, May 23). The Mets’ All-Time Home Run King will throw out a first pitch and then be available in the Coca-Cola Field concourse for autographs. The first 4,000 fans through the Swan St. Gate will also receive a complimentary Darryl Strawberry Bobble Head, presented by NAPA Auto Parts.

TODAY’S GAME: This afternoon, the Buffalo Bisons face the Columbus Clippers in the third game of a four-game series from Coca-Cola Field (1:05 p.m.). The Herd needs to win the next two games to earn a split of the series as the Clippers notched victories on Thursday (6-4) and Friday (10-4). After this series, the Bisons will welcome in the Lehigh Valley IronPigs for a four-game set from May 25-28.

OH NELLY: RHP Nelson Figueroa is making his first start with the Bisons since May 10. The veteran had his contract selected by New York on May 14 but didn’t pitch in his second stint with the Mets. Figueroa has been solid for Buffalo, allowing three runs or less in all five of his starts. Despite being 0-3, Figueroa has posted a 2.37ERA in his last three starts, having allowed just five runs on 13 hits in 19.0 innings of work.

F-MART: OF Fernando Martinez has collected multi-hit performances in each of his last four games. Since Monday, Martinez has averaged .471 (8-17) with two doubles, three home runs, five RBI and six runs scored. The stretch has helped Martinez raise his average 22 points from .274 to a team-leading .296. Martinez has 17 multi-hit performances in the team’s 39 games this year.

EXTRA-EXTRA: OF Fernando Martinez is currently tied with former Bison Todd Linden for the International League lead with 23 extra-base hits. Martinez has 14 doubles (T3rd in IL), two triples (T5th in IL) and seven home runs (T6th in IL). Martinez also leads the Bisons in runs scored (21) and RBI (25).

SOLID DEBUT: C/INF Javier Valentin has reached base safely in six of his first eight games with the team. The veteran went 0-2 last night but did draw two walks. Valentin has hit .292 (7-24) since joining the Herd on May 15. He has six RBI on only seven hits.

FIVE FOR FIVE: OF Cory Sullivan reached base all five times he came to the plate last night. The veteran doubled in the first inning, walked his next three times to the plate and then singled in the ninth inning. On the year, Sullivan leads the Bisons with 15 walks and is 3rd with 12 runs scored.
